Angel Cala
Raised in Ybor City, Florida, Angel is the son of Cuban immigrants and the first in his family to attend college. Growing up in a single-parent household alongside three siblings, he overcame significant socioeconomic and societal challenges brought upon by his father’s incarceration during his formative years. These early experiences fostered a deep interest in the legal landscape.
Angel began his academic journey at Hillsborough Community College, graduating with Honors, before going on to earn his bachelor’s degree, Magna Cum Laude, from the University of South Florida. Before entering law school, Angel served as a law enforcement officer in Florida. Though dedicated to his role in public safety, he sought to make a more proactive impact in the community.
Refocused and motivated to provide a childhood brighter than his own for his first born, Angel received his Juris Doctor from Stetson University College of Law, graduating Cum Laude. While at Stetson, he was selected to participate in the Honors Program Showcase, where he presented his research examining the lead-crime hypothesis and its disparate impact on impoverished communities. During this time at Stetson, Angel also worked closely with a local nonprofit organization providing legal assistance to human trafficking victims.
Today, Angel’s experience includes work in long term care injury liability, family law, and regulatory work. As a member of an underrepresented community, Angel is particularly committed to addressing systemic inequities and advocating for those whose voices are often unheard.
Outside of his professional commitments, Angel values spending quality time with his family. He enjoys reading and exploring the Pacific Northwest through hiking and fishing, which often leads to many adventures with his young ones. Additionally, he has a nostalgic appreciation for family movie nights and since arriving in Bend, frequently visits Blockbuster.
