Domestic Violence DefinedOregon law defines domestic violence as “abuse” between “family or household members”. Generally speaking, in order for domestic violence to be a crime, the perpetrator must act knowingly, intentionally, or recklessly in abusing the other person. Abuse, as defined in ORS 107.705, includes:

• Causing bodily injury;
• Placing another in fear of imminent bodily injury;
• Involuntary sexual relations by force or threat.

Family or Household members, is defined in ORS 107.705, as including:

• Spouses or former spouses;
• Adults related by blood of marriage (note this includes siblings, parents, and children–even as adults);
• Cohabitants or roommates (even those who have in the past and are not currently);
• Unmarried parents; and
• sexually intimate persons (dating relationship or otherwise) within two years.

The definition of domestic violence as it relates to family of household members is very broad.
