How to Avoid Driving Under the Influence
Most people don’t go out with the intention of getting behind the wheel intoxicated. After a couple of drinks, however, your judgment is one of the first signs of impairment, which can lead the drinker to get into a car and drive under the influence.
The DUI attorneys at Donahue Law Firm have put together a couple of easy ways to assure that you won’t be able to get behind the wheel when you shouldn’t:
Avoiding Driving Under the Influence
Leave Your Car at Home
If you know you are going out, plan ahead. It is easier than ever to get to and from your destination in safe fashion. With options such as Uber, Lyft, or a gold old fashioned taxi cab, you can be sure that you won’t get behind the wheel. Leave your car at home and take the safer, less expensive route. While it may be a little pricy now, it’s way less expensive than a DUII.
Designate a Driver
Perhaps you don’t want to pay for an Uber. Call a friend! Consider trading off nights where you offer to drive on a Friday, and then have a friend drive on a Saturday. Or, find a friend who doesn’t drink and ask nicely! Just be sure that whoever decides to be the designated driver, stays the designated driver.
Call a Trusted Friend
If you are in a position where you become more intoxicated than expected and don’t have the means to get an Uber, consider calling a trusted friend. They might be agitated, but they would rather you get home safe than drive drunk. Be sure to thank them later with a coffee or lunch.
Ditch the Keys
This is particularly easy at a house or dinner party. Ask your host if they could hold onto your keys in a safe place so even if you get tempted to drive later, you physically can’t. Make sure the host doesn’t give you back your keys until you have either slept it off or have completely sobered up.
DUII’s are unnecessary, expensive, and completely avoidable. Please consider any one of these options before operating a vehicle while under the influence.
